ABOUT DUBAI 

Located in the eastern Arabian Peninsula on the course of the Persian Gulf, Dubai stands to be the capital of the Emirates of Dubai and the most populated city in the nation of the United Arab Emirates.  It has been one of the most popular tourist destinations for its five star hotels and the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. As a city on the coast of its country, Dubai has also been a primary business hub for West Asia as one of the major transport hubs for passengers and cargo. HIGHER EDUCATION STRUCTURE 

The higher education structure in Dubai can be best described as a culmination of three different cycles. They are: 

 

The Bachelor’s or the first cycle: For students graduating fresh out of school, the Emirates Higher Education system gives students an undergraduate degree in a variety of fields that they may have interest in. The city hosts some of the finest universities that offer bachelor’s degree courses in applied sciences, arts, architecture, design, business management, IT engineering, hospitality, travel, humanities, journalism, law, medicine, natural sciences and social sciences. The degree usually takes upto 3-4 years to complete depending on the course.  

 

Requirement to study Bachelor’s in Dubai: 

  • Successful completion of class 12 with 60% and above
  • IELTS overall score of 6 and above. 

 

Master’s or the second cycle: After the successful completion of their bachelor’s degree, students may choose a variety of master’s courses that the Emirates provide based on their subject of interest and dream career ahead. Students may choose from the array of courses offered in courses in applied sciences, arts, architecture, design, business management, IT engineering, hospitality, travel, humanities, journalism, law, medicine, natural sciences and social sciences. While the degree may take upto 1-2 years to complete depending on the course, students are often taught through seminars, exercises, practical workshops, field trips and research. These help them to not only prepare for a professional career but also an academic career if they choose to later in life. 

 

Requirement to study Master’s in Dubai: 

  • Successful completion of class 12 with 60% and above
  • Successful completion of bachelor’s with 60% and above
  • IELTS overall score of 6 and above. 

 

Doctoral degree or the third cycle: After the successful completion of their master’s degree, international students in Dubai can also apply for a doctoral degree which all universities offer in the country. Students are expected to conduct independent research under direct academic supervision which is later subject to approval by a panel of experts appointed by the university. While the degree may take upto 3-4 to complete, students are also given a financial grant that will help them stay and continue research in the country. 

 

Requirement to pursue a PhD in Dubai: 

  • Successful completion of class 12 with 60% and above
  • Successful completion of bachelor’s with 60% and above
  • Successful completion of their Master’s degree with 60% and above 
  • An independent research idea
  • IELTS overall score of 6 and above. 

 

Cost of Studying in Australia 

The average cost of pursuing a bachelor’s degree ranges between AED 37500 – 70000 (around INR 753000 – 1400000) per year, while a master’s degree ranges between AED 55000 – 75000 per year (around INR 1100000 – 1500000). Universities also offer on campus residential facilities which may cost upto AED 14000 – 27000 per year (around INR 281000 – 542000). However, if they choose to book a private accommodation, the cost of living in Dubai for international students may range between AED 70000 – 100000 per year (around INR 1400000 – 2000000). 

 

WORK OPPORTUNITIES 

After obtaining permission from the university and the Department of Labour, students may choose to engage themselves in part time job opportunities in the city. International students are allowed to work either 15 hours per week or 60 hours per month depending on their employment necessities. Students may find ample work opportunities in cafes, restaurants, retail stores and even offices. However, they are also advised to be acquainted with native Arabic as it helps them engage in better communication in the city. 

Since the student visa is for 5 years, after completing their studies they may also choose to stay back and look for employment opportunities in the city. Once they do, they would have to apply for a residence permit that is eligible upto 3 years and subject to renewal. The process is usually initiated by the employer to the Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation. Since it is one of the major economic hubs of the region, students have the opportunity to look for employment opportunities among the 4500 companies that exist across its creative cluster. 

STUDENT VISA REQUIREMENTS 

For being awarded a student visa, an applicant must furnish the following: 

  • A valid passport that has minimum 6 months of validity during stay 
  • A letter of acceptance from any university in Dubai 
  • Proof of sufficient funds to sustain stay 
  • Proof of accommodation in Dubai 
  • Proof of medical insurance 

 

SCHOLARSHIPS 

Scholarships in Dubai are mostly offered by the university itself. However, students may also look out for scholarships offered by non private organizations’ in the educational sector.
