ABOUT MAURITIUS

The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean covering about 2000 kilometers to the east of Madagascar. With the country being a hub for recurring tourists throughout the year, it is known for the variety of flora and fauna that are available. The island was also home to dodos which, with several other avian species, have now become extinct in the world. It usually enjoys a mild tropical maritime climate which makes summers warm and winters cold. Although Port Louis stands to be the largest city and capital of the country, students have often found residence in Vacoas-Phoenix, Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Curepipe. 

 

HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM IN MAURITIUS 

The Mauritius Higher Education structure can be best described as a culmination of three different cycles. They are: 

 

The Bachelor’s or the first cycle: For students graduating fresh out of school, the Mauritius Higher Education system gives students an undergraduate degree in a variety of fields that they may have interest in. The country hosts some of the finest universities that offer bachelor degree courses in agriculture, applied sciences, arts, business management, IT, education, engineering, environmental sciences, hospitality, humanities, journalism, law, medicine, natural sciences and social sciences. The degree might take upto 2-3 years to complete depending on the course. 

 

Requirement to study Bachelor’s in Mauritius: 

  • Successful completion of class 12 with 60% and above
  • An overall IELTS score 6 and above

 

Master’s or the second cycle: After the successful completion of their bachelor’s degree, students may choose a variety of master’s courses that Mauritius provides based on their subject of interest and dream career ahead. These include agriculture, applied sciences, arts, business management, IT, education, engineering, environmental sciences, hospitality, humanities, journalism, law, medicine, natural sciences and social sciences. While the degree may take upto 1-1.5 years to complete depending on the course, students are often taught through seminars, exercises, practical workshops, field trips and research. These help them to not only prepare for a professional career but also an academic career if they choose to later in life. 

 

Requirement to study Master’s in Poland: 

  • Successful completion of class 12 with 60% and above
  • Successful completion of bachelor’s with 60% and above
  • An overall IELTS score 6 and above

 

Doctoral degree or the third cycle: After the successful completion of their master’s degree, international students in Mauritius can also apply for a doctoral degree which all universities offer in the country. Students are expected to conduct independent research under direct academic supervision which is later subject to approval by a panel of experts appointed by the university. While the degree may take upto 3-4 years to complete, students are also given a financial grant that will help them stay and continue research in the country. 

 

Requirement to study PhD in Mauritius: 

  • Successful completion of class 12 with 60% and above
  • Successful completion of bachelor’s with 60% and above
  • Successful completion of master’s with 60% and above
  • Independent research idea 
  • An overall IELTS score 6 and above

 

Cost of studying in Mauritius 

While tuition fees for a bachelor’s program may range between MUR 150000 – 350000 (around INR 280000 – 650000) per year, a master’s degree may cost between MUR 130000 – 600000 (around INR 250000 – 1150000). Students may also find affordable accommodation including all other amnesties between MUR 11910 – 19850 (INR 22000 – 37000). 

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The Mauritius Student Visa allows international students to work for a total of 20 hours per week. They may find a variety in opportunities in the service sector which include restaurants, cafes, hotels, companies and the university itself. While English is spoken in the country, students are advised to be also acquainted with the Mauritian Creole to better communicate in the country. 

After successfully graduating from their studies, students are given an additional six months of stay in the country to find an employment opportunity. Once they do, they can transition their student visa to a Young Professionals Occupation permit that would allow them to live and work in Mauritius for upto 3 years. After the stipulated three years, they can transition into the normal residency permit and then onto the process of naturalization. 

 

VISA REQUIREMENT FOR MAURITIUS 

To obtain a student visa for Mauritius, an applicant must submit: 

  • A passport that is valid at least 6 months after the completion of their stay in the country
  • A letter of acceptance from any Mauritius University 
  • Proof of sufficient funds to sustain their stay in the country 

 

SCHOLARSHIPS 

While Universities may have their own set of scholarships, the government and nongovernmental organizations have recently been very proactive in providing financial assistance to international students. Most notably, the Educational Future International Scholarship, Sir Ratanji Dalal Research Scholarship and the Bayer Science and Education Foundation Scholarships are some of the many international scholarships that students have availed.
